History of Yuengling Beer from a Lewisville BarAt Daddy-O's Pub, knowing Good Beer is what we do BEST! Along with our Daily Drink Specials, we pride ourselves as being one of the best beer bars in Lewisville that carries a wide variety of Beers. To know Beer in America, is to know about The Oldest American Brewery - Yuengling - The Beer of Presidents.

Yuengling Brewery features the following products: Traditional Lager, Light Lager, Yuengling Premium Beer, Yuengling Premium Light Beer, Original Black & Tan, Dark-Brewed Porter, Lord Chesterfield Ale, Yuengling Bock, and Yuengling Octoberfest. Now let's get back to the history of Yuengling or D.G. Yuengling and Son.

David Gottlob (D.G.) Jüngling came to the United States from Aldingen, Germany in 1823. Jüngling eventually anglicanized his name to Yuengling and started the "Eagle Brewery" on Center Street in Pottsville, Pennsylvania in 1829.  In 1831 the first brewery burned down and they moved it to West Mahantongo Street and 5th Street. (Its current location)  In 1873, after Frederick Yuengling joined his father's brewery and changed its name to "D.G. Yuengling and Son". Though the company changed its name, its bald eagle emblem remained.  Sometime during the late 19th century, D.G. Yuengling and Son opened breweries in Saratoga, New York City, and Trail, British Columbia, even though they were eventually merged with the Pottsville plant.

In 1899, after the death of Frederick Yuengling, Frank Yuengling (Frederick's Son) headed the brewery.  As with most breweries during the Prohibition Era, Yuengling started brewing "near beers" to survive.  They had three varieties: Yuengling Special, Yuengling Por-Tor, and Yuengling Juvo. The brewery also ran a dairy to produce ice cream and opened dance halls in Philadelphia, and New York City.  After Prohibition was over, Yuengling sent a truckload of "Winner Beer" to President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

In 1963, Richard L. Yuengling and F. Dohrman Yuengling took over the brewery after Frank died. The 1970's posed a challenge to the small brewery with the rise of the large commercial breweries in America.  Yuengling was able to keep going by meeting the demands of its customer base in Schuylkill County.  1976 gave a renewed interest in the brewery and its beers since it was the United States Bicentennial and people were very interested in the history and heritage of the United States. In 1977, Yuengling bought the rights to use the Mount Carbon - Bavarian Premium Beer when the Mount Carbon Brewery went out of the business.  Brewing at Mount Carbon was very short lived and Yuengling abandoned the beer and the Mount Carbon Brewery.

In 1981, Yuengling closed down the dairy that helped them through Prohibition.  The dairy building still stands across Mahantongo Street and still carries the Yuengling signs to this day. By 1985, Richard L. ("Dick") Yuengling, Jr. took over as the 5th Generation Company President.  This was also the same year the Pennsylvanian brewery was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Oldest Brewery in the United States. Even though the brewery's trademark was only registered since 1995.  In 1987, Yuengling reintroduced a lager that they had not made for some time to take advantage of the popularity of heavier-style beers.  Since then, Yuengling Lager has become the flagship beer for the brewery.  It accounts for 80% of production from the brewery.  Yuengling became a "major micro brewer" by selling 138,000 barrels in 1990.  It reflected a surge of interest in craft breweries across the nation.   Yuengling was the largest brewer of porter in the United States. There was so much demand from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware that the small brewery could not keep up. By 1999, Yuengling purchased the Stroh Brewery plant in Tampa, Florida to increase manufacturing. In 2000, they opened up a third brewery in Port Carbon, Pennsylvania.  With all of this expansion, the brewery was able to distribute their beers throughout the East Coast.

In 2008, President Barack Obama was elected as president of the United States.  It is well-known that Yuengling is his favorite beer.  On March 19, 2010, President Obama sent a case of Yuengling to Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper to cover a friendly wager on the 2010 Winter Olympics Hockey Final.

Richard Yuengling continues the Yuengling tradition as he grooms his daughters to be the 6th generation of the brewing family. Each succeeding owner generation has bought the company from the previous generation at full market price. By 2012, Yuengling has spread further westward to include: Indiana, Kentucky, West Virginia, Ohio, South Carolina, Florida, Tennessee, and Alabama.  Though Yuengling is oldest American Brewery, their products are not distributed to Texas yet.  Let us know if you want Daddy-O's Pub to carry Yuengling or any other craft beer, please let one of our friendly bartenders know and we'll fight the good fight to get it brought into Texas and more importantly into OUR BAR!
