Today, Daddy-O's Pub would like to give you a little insight on Karaoke in Japan. Since it is the birthplace of this sensation that is sweeping our nation.

Karaoke got its humble beginnings in the city of Kobe in Japan. Karaoke is a word formed from putting two Japanese words together. "Kara" that comes from Karappo that means "empty" and "Oke", shortened from Okesutura meaning "orchestra". So, Karaoke means "empty orchestra". Karaoke was and is still being used used by Japanese businessmen to de-stress themselves after a hard day at work. Like many of us, they would grab some friends and co-workers and go to a local bar to have drinks and sing karaoke to have fun and get some time under the spotlight. The only difference between Karaoke in Japan (along with other parts of Asia) and in the United States is that we sing karaoke out on an open stage at a bar. The Japanese sing their Karaoke Songs in a "Karaoke Box". A karaoke box is a small to medium-sized room containing karaoke equipment providing a more intimate singing performance. It is not to say that there are not "karaoke boxes" here in the states, but it is more common in Japan and Asia. Karaoke is a very fun hobby and there have been many singers who have obtained their stardom from singing karaoke. Even some music professionals use karaoke as their live music performances. You've got to admit, you like singing in the car, in the shower, or in the crowd with your favorite band at a live music venue. Singing seems to be the cure to take your troubles away and is very relaxing. That is why so many people get addicted to karaoke.
